Today, being innovative is considered fundamental to creating and sustaining a competitive market position. Thus, organisations are required, now more than ever, to grow and mature their innovation capability. Indutech, in collaboration with the Global Competitiveness Centre (GCC) at Stellenbosch University, has developed an Innovation Capability Maturity Model (ICMM) that can be used to measure and improve the innovation capability of an organisation. The ICMM is accompanied by a methodology for improving an organisation™s innovation capability. Basically, the organisation conducts an innovation capability assessment (ICA) in order to establish their innovation capability status quo. Results from the assessment include a prioritised list of innovation requirements that should be addressed, together with an action plan for achieving this. It is, however, imperative that innovative activity continues throughout the improvement process. The capability improvement initiative is therefore executed in parallel with other innovation initiatives in order to extract maximum benefit from their outputs. The objective is to stimulate mutual learning between the two initiatives and thereby achieve synergy.
ICAThe assessment process is primarily carried out using a questionnaire that is circulated to various role players within the organisation. The questionnaires are then interpreted based on the roles of those individuals, amongst other things. The outcome of the assessment is a prioritised list of innovation requirements that may be addressed in an effort to improve the innovation capability maturity of the organisation.
INNOVATION CAPABILITY IMPROVEMENT METHODOLOGYThe process of improving the innovation capability of an organisation is based on the parallel execution of actual innovation projects and multiple consecutive innovation capability improvement initiatives. These parallel processes encompass several points of interaction to facilitate cross-initiative learning and improve the outcomes of both. Ultimately, by being innovative, simultaneously improving the innovative capability and ensuring mutual learning between the two processes, faster and better results may be achieved.
